Chevrolet keys I make on-site

Gaucho Keys is a mobile auto locksmith, so instead of towing your Chevrolet to a dealership you call me and I come to you — at home, at work or wherever the vehicle is parked in Winnipeg and the surrounding area. I cut and program Chevrolet keys, fobs and transponder (chip) keys on the spot, and you get the exact, all-in price before any work starts.

  • Lost all keys — a brand-new Chevrolet key generated, cut and programmed from scratch, even when no working key is left.
  • Spare / duplicate keys — a second key cut and programmed while your original still works, so you’re never down to one.
  • Key fob & remote programming — fobs, remote-head keys and remote-start fobs set up to your vehicle.
  • Transponder (chip) keys — the chip inside the key read, cloned or programmed so the engine will start.
  • Smart / push-to-start keys — proximity fobs for newer Chevrolets programmed on-site.
  • Car lockout — locked out with the key inside? I open the vehicle without damage.

I cover most Chevrolet models, older ones included — the Silverado 1500, Equinox, Cruze, Malibu, Trax, Traverse, Tahoe, Suburban, Blazer, Colorado, Camaro, Impala and the Bolt EV. Whether you drive a work truck, a family SUV or a daily commuter, the key or fob is made where the vehicle sits. Tell me your exact year and model and I’ll confirm what your Chevrolet needs before I come out.

Chevrolet drivers in Winnipeg call me most often for three things: a lost key that has to be made from scratch, a spare cut before the only key goes missing, and a fob or transponder (chip) key programmed for a Silverado, Equinox or Malibu. Because the Silverado is one of the most common trucks on Manitoba roads, it’s also the Chevrolet key I make most weeks — from older PassKey chip keys right up to the push-button proximity fob on the newest trucks.

Winnipeg winters are hard on keys and fobs. Worn transponder chips, cracked fob cases and dead fob batteries tend to surface on the first cold mornings, and a single-key household is one lost key away from being stranded. Cutting a spare while your original still works is far easier and less costly than an all-keys-lost job later on.

How it works

  • Message, texttext or call. Send your Chevrolet’s year and model — a photo of the key helps.
  • I text you the all-in price before I drive out — that number does not change at your car — and we pick a time that suits you.
  • I come to you and cut & program your Chevrolet key on-site, right where the vehicle is parked.

What to have ready at your car

Before any work, I always check your vehicle registration and a matching photo ID that shows you are the owner or have the owner’s authority. Making car keys carries real responsibility, so this check is a standard, non-negotiable part of how I operate — it protects you, protects me and keeps everything above board. If the Chevrolet is registered to a company or a family member, let me know when you call and I’ll tell you what paperwork I need to see.

From $200 for a Chevrolet with no working key left · from $160 for a spare.

Chevrolet fobs and transponder keys start from $160, a smart / push-to-start key from $170, and an all-keys-lost job from $200 — taxes in, confirmed before I come out, and you pay only once the key works. I accept Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Interac e-Transfer or cash.

1-year warranty on my work · No call-out fee — you pay only for the result.

Where I come to you

I come to you right across Winnipeg — from downtown, St. Vital, St. James, Transcona and Fort Garry to Charleswood, St. Boniface, Tuxedo and the newer suburbs like Sage Creek and Bridgwater. I also cover the surrounding region, including Selkirk, Lockport, St. Andrews, West St. Paul, Headingley, Stony Mountain, Stonewall, Oakbank and Niverville. Wherever your Chevrolet is parked in the city there is no trip fee; for towns outside Winnipeg a travel fee applies and it is always included in the all-in price I give you up front.

I'm open 8 AM to 9 PM, seven days a week, including evenings and weekends — the times a lost truck key or a dead fob tends to catch people out. Call, text or send a WhatsApp photo of your key or VIN and I’ll confirm the part and the price before I head over.

How I make a Chevrolet key on-site

Every job starts the same way: I confirm the vehicle is yours by checking your registration and matching photo ID, then work out exactly which key your Chevrolet uses from the year, model and VIN. For a lost key I read the lock or pull the code, cut a new blade to match, and program the transponder or proximity fob to the car’s immobilizer so the engine will start. For a spare I clone or add a key alongside your existing one. It all happens from my mobile setup in your driveway or at the roadside — no towing, and the car never has to be left overnight.

Why Winnipeg Chevrolet drivers call a mobile locksmith

Going to a dealer usually means arranging a tow, leaving the vehicle for days and paying dealer rates. A mobile auto locksmith comes to the Chevrolet instead, makes the key where it sits and normally costs less than the dealer for the same working key. There is no call-out fee and no trip fee in Winnipeg, you get the all-in price up front with taxes included, and under my No Fix = No Pay policy you pay only once the key turns, the fob programs and the engine starts.

Chevrolet keys by year and model

Chevrolet’s key technology has changed a great deal since 2000, and the right key for your vehicle comes down to the General Motors anti-theft system used that year. In the late 1990s and early 2000s many Chevrolets ran GM’s PassLock system — a coded lock cylinder paired with a plain, non-transponder key, so a straight-cut key could start the car once the system relearned it. From 1997 GM introduced PassKey III (PK3), its first true transponder (chip) system, and through the 2000s almost every Chevrolet moved to a chip key. On a chip car a copied blade alone will not start the engine — the transponder has to be programmed to the vehicle.

Through the mid-2000s and 2010s Chevrolet added remote-head keys and switchblade flip keys, then moved to proximity smart keys with push-button start. The Corvette was an early adopter of keyless-go from 2005; the redesigned Malibu brought push-to-start to the mainstream line-up from 2016, the third-generation Equinox and Traverse followed from 2018, and the fourth-generation Silverado 1500 added push-button start from 2019 (standard across most trims from 2022). The table below is a general guide — trim level changes things, so I always confirm from your VIN.

General guide only — your VIN confirms the exact key.

Chevrolet eraTypical key typeExample models
Late 1990s–early 2000sPassLock, non-transponder keyCavalier, older Malibu, older Impala, and the Silverado, Tahoe and Suburban up to 2006
1997–2004PassKey III (PK3) transponder chip keySome cars — your VIN is the final word; the trucks stayed on PassLock until 2007
Mid-2000s–early 2010sTransponder, remote-head or flip keySilverado (from 2007, with a separate remote), Equinox (from 2010), Cobalt, HHR, Impala
2005 onwardEarly proximity smart key, push-buttonCorvette (C6/C7)
2016 onwardProximity smart key, push-to-startMalibu, Camaro, Cruze (higher trims)
2018 onwardProximity smart key, push-to-startEquinox, Traverse, Blazer, Bolt EV
2019 onward (standard 2022)Push-button proximity keySilverado 1500

On the Silverado 1500 I see everything from PassLock keys on early-2000s trucks and chip keys with a separate remote through 2018 to flip keys and the push-button proximity fob on 2019-and-newer trucks. The Equinox and Malibu are usually transponder or flip keys on older cars and proximity smart keys on the newer generations, while the Cruze, Trax and Sonic are typically transponder or flip keys. Two Chevrolets of the same year can still take different keys depending on trim — send a photo of your key or your VIN and I’ll confirm yours before I come out. The discontinued GM brands mostly share these GM systems (the Toyota-built Pontiac Vibe aside), so I also make keys for older Pontiac, Saturn, Oldsmobile and Hummer vehicles.

Common Chevrolet key situations I handle

  • Lost the only key to a Silverado or Equinox — a new key made from scratch on-site.
  • Need a spare before winter — a duplicate cut and programmed while the original still works.
  • Cracked or water-damaged fob — a replacement fob programmed to your Chevrolet.
  • Fob buttons work but the engine won’t start — often a worn transponder, re-cut and re-programmed.
  • Bought a used Chevrolet with one key — a second key so you’re never down to one.

What affects the price of a Chevrolet key

Every Chevrolet key job is quoted up front and all-in, with taxes included, so the number I give you on the phone is the number you pay. What changes the price is the key type your model uses: a spare transponder or flip key starts from $160, a smart / push-to-start proximity key from $170, and an all-keys-lost job — where a brand-new key is generated with no working key present — from $200. A car lockout with no key made is $150. Fob and dealer-only chip pricing depends on the model, so send me the year and VIN for an exact figure. There is no call-out fee, no trip fee in Winnipeg, and you pay only once the key works.

Chevrolet fobs, remotes and remote start

Many Chevrolet trucks and SUVs come with a remote-start fob, and a lost or broken one is a common reason people call. I supply and program replacement fobs and remote-head keys for most Chevrolet models, older ones included, including the remote-start buttons where the vehicle was factory-equipped. If your fob still opens the doors but the buttons have stopped working, it is often a flat fob battery or a worn case rather than a programming fault — I can tell you which on the spot and charge only for the work that is actually needed.

Buying a used Chevrolet? Add a second key

A lot of used Chevrolets change hands in Winnipeg with only one key — sometimes a single smart fob and no spare at all. That one key is a single point of failure: lose it or damage it and the next step is a full all-keys-lost job, which costs more than simply cutting a spare now. I can add a second transponder key or program an extra proximity fob for most Chevrolet models, older ones included, so a private-sale or dealer-lot purchase isn’t left riding on a lone key.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a Chevrolet key if I've lost all of them?
Yes. Even with no working key, I can generate and program a brand-new Chevrolet key from scratch on-site for most models, older ones included. Tell me your exact year and model and I'll confirm.
Do you program Chevrolet key fobs and remotes?
Yes. I program Chevrolet key fobs, remotes and transponder (chip) keys on-site for most models, older ones included.
My older Chevrolet key has no chip. Is that normal?
It can be. In the late 1990s and early 2000s many Chevrolets ran GM's PassLock system, where a coded lock cylinder is paired with a plain, non-transponder key, so a straight-cut key could start the car once the system relearned it. From 1997 GM introduced PassKey III (PK3) chip keys on some cars, the trucks followed in 2007, and by the 2010s almost every Chevrolet used one — on those, a copied blade alone will not start the engine. Your year, model and VIN tell me which system yours has.
How much is a Chevrolet car key in Winnipeg?
A spare chip, remote-head or flip key — a Silverado up to 2018, a Cruze, Cobalt or Impala, or an older Equinox — starts from $160. A proximity smart key for a push-button Malibu (from 2016), Equinox or Traverse (from 2018) or Silverado 1500 (from 2019) starts from $170, and an all-keys-lost job from $200. All-in with taxes, given before I come out, and you pay only once the key works.
Does my Chevrolet need a chip key or a smart key?
It depends on the year, model and trim. Most Chevrolets from the 2000s use a transponder (chip) key, a remote-head key or a flip key, while many models from the mid-2010s onward, such as the newer Malibu, Equinox, Traverse and the 2019-and-newer Silverado, use a proximity smart key with push-button start. Send me your year and VIN and I'll tell you exactly which key yours takes.
Can you program a spare Chevrolet key without going to the dealer?
Yes. For most Chevrolet models, older ones included I cut and program spare keys, fobs and smart keys on-site, so there's no need to book the dealership or tow the vehicle. It's usually cheaper than the dealer, there's no trip fee in Winnipeg, and I come to you anywhere in the city and the surrounding area.
