Stonewall is a town of about 5,000 people in the Interlake, about 23 km north of the Winnipeg city limit by road and completely surrounded by the RM of Rockwood. Highway 7 is the main road north from the city, and Highway 67 is the main highway through town.
Stonewall grew up around limestone quarries in the 1880s, and the town hall at 293 Main is built of that same local stone. A good share of the town now commutes into Winnipeg for work, so the car spends its day either in a driveway here or in a lot down in the city.
Almost everything in Stonewall parks off Main Street, and the numbers climb as you head south: the Quarry Park lot at 166 Main by the old lime kilns and Kinsmen Lake, the town hall at 293, the Rockwood Motor Inn at 390, the Co-op food store lot at 420, and the arena and curling-rink lots at the Veterans Memorial Sports Complex at the far south end. Off Main it is the two school lots on Second Avenue North — Bobby Bend and Stonewall Centennial — Stonewall Collegiate over on Fifth Street, and the health centre on Third Avenue South.
Out on the newer streets like Quarry Ridge Drive, on the south-west edge of town, it is driveways and attached garages, while on the old grid of numbered avenues and streets around Main the car is more often at the curb; either way I work at the car where it stands, and all I need is room to get a door open.
