Stony Mountain sits on Highway 7, the continuation of Brookside Boulevard, north of the Winnipeg city limit at Mollard Road. Along the western side of the community the highway briefly shares the road with PR 321, which runs west to Grosse Isle and the other way to McPhillips Street (Highway 8); farther north, Highway 7 passes just east of Stonewall at the Highway 67 junction and narrows to two lanes toward Teulon.
It is an unincorporated community in the RM of Rockwood, home to Stony Mountain School at 139 School Road (kindergarten to grade 8) and to Stony Mountain Institution, the federal correctional facility.
The “mountain” is a limestone escarpment where stone was cut as early as 1893, and the old quarry is now Limestone Park, also called Stony Mountain Quarry Park, with walking trails, lookout points, a picnic area, a quarry pond and a disc golf course among the cliffs.
School Road is the everyday centre: the Stony Mountain Recreation Centre at 117 rents out its ice and its hall, with a kitchen and seating for 350, the school is a little farther along, and Bedson Park has the playground. In winter there is also the Stony Mountain Ski Area just north-east of town, a small hill with a handle tow, a rope tow and about 30 metres of vertical. Winters have reached −42.5 °C on record, hard on fob batteries and on anyone waiting outside for a key.
Stony Mountain is outside Winnipeg, in the RM of Rockwood, so the price includes a travel fee: $2 per km from the Winnipeg city limit to Stony Mountain, up Highway 7. You get that exact all-in figure before I set out, and it is the figure you pay.

Stony Mountain is outside Winnipeg, so a travel fee is already in that figure, and you hear the total before I leave. You pay only once the key works or the car is open.
- Half price on a second key — same car, same visit, with a 1-year warranty on the work. Easier while the car is at home than after the only key has gone missing on a quarry trail or at the ski hill.
