A key cut and programmed on-site

Car key cutting is the process of shaping a key blade so it matches the pattern of your vehicle’s locks. At Gaucho Keys we do it as a mobile service: we bring the cutting machines and the programming equipment to wherever your car is, cut the key, and — on modern vehicles — program its chip so the car will actually start. You never have to tow the car to a dealership or leave it overnight. Give us the year, make and model, and we’ll tell you exactly what your vehicle needs and the all-in price before we start.

Mechanical cuts and laser (sidewinder) cuts

There are two broad kinds of car key cut, and it helps to know which one your vehicle uses:

Cut typeWhat it looks likeTypically found on
Mechanical (edge) cutNotches filed along the edge of the bladeMost vehicles built before the mid-2010s and many economy models since
Laser / sidewinder cutA winding channel milled into the flat face of the bladeNewer and higher-trim vehicles that use high-security keys
A laser/sidewinder blade is harder to copy and resists picking better, so it needs a dedicated machine. We carry the equipment for both types.

Because we come prepared for both, it does not matter whether your car uses a simple edge-cut key or a modern high-security blade — we cut it at your vehicle.

Cutting to code vs. copying your key

If you still have a working key, the simplest job is a straight duplicate — we read your existing key and cut a matching one. If your key is lost, worn past the point of copying, or you have no keys at all, we cut to code instead. Cutting to code means we work out the correct key pattern from the vehicle itself — its lock or its key code — and cut a fresh key from scratch. That is how we make working keys even when there is nothing left to copy from.

The step people forget: the chip has to be programmed

This is the most important thing to understand about modern key cutting. On virtually every car built from about the year 2000 onward, cutting the blade is only half the job. The vehicle also checks for a tiny transponder chip inside the key before it will run. A key that is only cut — not programmed — will turn the lock and open the door, but the engine will not start and the car will not drive. That is why we cut and program in the same on-site visit: you end up with a key that both unlocks and starts your vehicle. For push-to-start and proximity vehicles the same idea applies to the smart key or fob — it has to be paired to the car electronically, not just cut.

We come to you

Everything happens at your vehicle. Once we’ve confirmed what your car needs and given you the exact all-in price, we come to you — home, workplace or roadside — and finish the key on the spot. No towing, no waiting days for a dealership appointment, and no separate call-out fee.

From $160 all-in for a cut-and-programmed car key — taxes included.

All keys lost: from $200 all-in. Fobs and chip keys by quote.

A plain metal duplicate for a very old, no-chip vehicle is uncommon and is still a mobile call-out, so we give you a quote for it up front. Every price includes the key, the cutting and the programming — no hidden extras. We accept Visa, Mastercard, Interac e-Transfer or cash, paid right at your car.

1-year warranty · No call-out fee — you pay only for the result.

Frequently asked questions

Do you cut keys on-site?
Yes. We are a mobile service — we bring the key-cutting machines and the programming tools to your vehicle and cut the key right there, whether you are at home, at work, or in a parking lot in Winnipeg or a nearby town.
Can you cut a key without the original?
Yes. If you still have a working key we can duplicate it, but we can also cut a brand-new key to your vehicle’s code when every key is lost. An all-keys-lost job starts from $200 all-in because it takes extra work to read the code and program the vehicle to accept the new key.
Does a cut key start the car?
On almost every vehicle built from around 2000 onward, not on its own. The blade cut only turns the lock and opens the door. The car also reads a chip (transponder) inside the key, so the key has to be programmed to the vehicle before it will drive. We cut and program in the same visit so your key both opens and starts the car.
Do you cut laser / sidewinder keys?
Yes. Many newer vehicles use high-security laser or sidewinder blades, with a winding groove milled into the side of the blade rather than simple edge notches. We cut these on-site with the right machine and program the chip too.
How much does car key cutting cost?
A cut-and-programmed key starts from $160 all-in, taxes included. All keys lost starts from $200. A plain metal duplicate for a very old car with no chip is uncommon and still a mobile call-out, so we quote that up front. You always hear the price before we start and pay only once the key works.
Do you come to me?
Yes. We are fully mobile and come to you across Winnipeg and the surrounding towns such as Selkirk, Lockport and Oakbank. There is no separate call-out fee — you pay only for the finished key.
