Mechanical cuts and laser (sidewinder) cuts
There are two broad kinds of car key cut, and it helps to know which one your vehicle uses:

Because I come prepared for both, it does not matter whether your car uses a simple edge-cut key or a modern high-security blade — I cut it at your vehicle. The cut type does not change the starting price: a cut-and-programmed key is from $160 all-in either way, and if your make costs more, I tell you before I start.
Cutting to code vs. copying your key
If you still have a working key, the simplest job is a car key copy, a straight duplicate — I read your existing key and cut a matching one. If your key is lost, worn past the point of copying, or you have no keys at all, I cut to code instead. Cutting to code means I work out the correct key pattern from the vehicle itself — its lock or its key code — and cut a fresh key from scratch. That is how I make working keys even when there is nothing left to copy from. A spare, copied or cut to code while you still have a working key, starts from $160 all-in; with every key lost, cutting to code starts from $200, because the car also has to learn the new key.
The step people forget: the chip has to be programmed
This is the most important thing to understand about modern key cutting. On virtually every car built from about the year 2000 onward, cutting the blade is only half the job. The vehicle also checks for a tiny transponder chip inside the key before it will run. A key that is only cut — not programmed — will turn the lock and open the door, but the engine will not start and the car will not drive. That is why I cut and program in the same on-site visit: you end up with a key that both unlocks and starts your vehicle. For push-to-start and proximity vehicles the same idea applies to the smart key or fob — it has to be paired to the car electronically, not just cut.

- Do you cut keys on-site?
- Yes. I am fully mobile — I bring the key-cutting machines and the programming tools to your vehicle and cut the key right there, whether you are at home, at work, or in a parking lot in Winnipeg or a nearby town.
- Can you cut a key without the original?
- Yes. If you still have a working key I can duplicate it, but I can also cut a brand-new key to your vehicle’s code when every key is lost. An all-keys-lost job starts from $200 all-in because it takes extra work to read the code and program the vehicle to accept the new key.
- Does a cut key start the car?
- On almost every vehicle built from around 2000 onward, not on its own. The blade cut only turns the lock and opens the door. The car also reads a chip (transponder) inside the key, so the key has to be programmed to the vehicle before it will drive. I cut and program in the same visit so your key both opens and starts the car.
- Do you cut laser / sidewinder keys?
- Yes. Many newer vehicles use high-security laser or sidewinder blades, with a winding groove milled into the side of the blade rather than simple edge notches. I cut these on-site with the right machine and program the chip too.
- How much does car key cutting cost?
- A cut-and-programmed key starts from $160 all-in, taxes included. All keys lost starts from $200.
