What Is a Transponder (Chip) Key?

Mobile auto locksmith · Winnipeg, MB · Updated June 2026

A transponder key is a car key with a tiny electronic chip hidden inside the plastic head. When you turn the key, your car checks that chip and only starts if it recognizes the code. No matching chip, no start.

Why cars use them

Most vehicles from roughly 2000 and newer use some form of chip key. The idea is simple: a key that is cut to fit the lock is not enough on its own. The car also wants to "hear" the right signal from the chip before it will let the engine run. That is why a plain copy cut at a hardware store will often open a door or turn in the ignition but will not actually start the car.

How the chip actually works

The chip has no battery. A small antenna ring around the ignition (or near the start button) powers it for a split second and reads its code. That code has to match what the car has stored. Because of this, a new transponder key has to be programmed to your specific vehicle, not just cut.

  • The chip is sealed inside the key head, so you cannot see it
  • It needs no battery of its own
  • The car must be told to accept each new chip
  • Cutting the key and programming the chip are two separate steps

What this means if you need a key

Because every chip key needs programming, the price depends on your vehicle. Some makes and models are quick; others take more time and equipment. The honest answer is that I cannot give one flat number for every car. Tell me your year, make and model and I can confirm what is involved and quote you up front.

As a rough guide, a lost car key replacement starts from $200 and a spare or duplicate key starts from $160, but chip programming on certain vehicles can change that. I will always agree the price with you before any work starts, and you only pay once the new key actually works.

A quick word on getting it done

I am a mobile locksmith, so I come to you at home, at work or at the roadside anywhere in Winnipeg and the surrounding area. Before I start, I check your vehicle registration and matching photo ID. That is just my standard procedure to confirm the vehicle is yours and keep everything legitimate. With most makes and models from 2000 and newer, a chip key is very doable on the spot once I know what you are driving.

Frequently asked questions

Can I just copy a chip key at a hardware store?
A hardware store can usually cut a blank to match your key, but it cannot program the chip to your car. Without programming, the copy may turn but the engine will not start. You need a locksmith or dealer with the right equipment.
Does the chip in my key have a battery?
No. The transponder chip itself has no battery. It is powered for a moment by the car when you turn the key or hit start. The battery you sometimes replace is for the remote buttons on a fob, which is a separate part.
How much does a chip key cost?
It depends on your vehicle, so it is a quote rather than a flat price. Tell me your year, make and model and I will confirm what is involved and agree the price up front. You only pay once the key works.
