Jeep Wrangler keys by year
On the Wrangler the key follows the generation. TJ and JK Wranglers from the mid-2000s through the 2010s use a traditional cut key with a hidden transponder chip that the Chrysler Sentry Key immobilizer has to recognize before the engine will run, and the Wrangler kept this bladed chip key far longer than most vehicles, often paired with a separate lock and unlock remote. The current JL generation, from 2018, uses a proximity push-to-start smart key. Because 2018 was an overlap year, with the outgoing JK and the new JL on sale side by side, I confirm exactly what your Jeep needs from the year and VIN, then cut and program it on-site.
2018 and newer Ram, Jeep, Dodge and Chrysler vehicles have a security gateway module that blocks key programming through the normal diagnostic port — which is why some locksmiths send these to the dealer. I carry the 12+8 bypass cable for it, so a 2018–2024 JL Wrangler is an ordinary on-site job. For a 2025 or newer Wrangler, send me the year and VIN first and I’ll tell you honestly whether I can do it.

TJ and JK Wranglers use a bladed chip key behind Chrysler’s Sentry Key immobilizer; the JL uses proximity push-to-start. Here is what I fix.
- Sentry Key immobilizer no-start — If Sentry Key can’t read the transponder, the Wrangler won’t start. I program a chip key coded to your Jeep.
- JL proximity fob won’t start it — On 2018-and-newer push-button Wranglers, a flat fob battery or lost pairing stops detection — I replace or re-program it.
- Worn bladed key — The long-serving bladed Wrangler key wears with use and won’t turn cleanly — I cut a fresh key to your locks.
- All keys lost — I generate and program a new Wrangler key on-site with none present.
