On the Equinox the key tends to follow the generation. The first-generation Equinox (2005–2009) uses GM’s Passlock system: the key is a plain cut blade with no chip inside, and the anti-theft check happens in a sensor in the ignition lock cylinder instead, usually with a separate keyless remote. A new key for those years is cut to your locks, and if the security system has locked the car out, a Passlock relearn is done on-site. The second generation moved to a flip key that folds the blade together with the lock, unlock & panic buttons into one remote unit. On the newest generations and higher trims, Chevrolet uses a push-to-start smart (proximity) key you keep in your pocket. Because the same model year can carry different keys depending on trim, I confirm the exact key your Equinox needs from your year & VIN, then cut and program it on-site.
