Ram 1500 keys by year
Thanks to Chrysler’s Sentry Key transponder immobilizer, almost every Ram 1500 from 2000 and newer needs a programmed chip key, not just a cut blade, to start. The fourth-generation 1500 (2009–2018, sold on as the Ram 1500 Classic into the early 2020s) typically uses a one-piece fobik key that slots into a Wireless Ignition Node, with push-button-start versions on many trucks. The fifth-generation truck (2019 and newer) comes with push-button start, and higher trims add a proximity smart key that locks, unlocks and starts without taking the fob out. Which setup your 1500 uses comes down to its exact year and trim — I confirm from your year and VIN, then cut and program it on-site.
2018 and newer Ram, Jeep, Dodge and Chrysler vehicles have a security gateway module that blocks key programming through the normal diagnostic port — which is why some locksmiths send these to the dealer. I carry the 12+8 bypass cable for it, so a 2018–2024 Ram 1500 is an ordinary on-site job. The 2025 and newer Ram 1500 is the exception: its new gateway can’t be reached with a cable and I can’t program it yet, so for that truck the dealer is the right call.
Ram 1500 key or fob not working? Common fixes
Almost every Ram 1500 from 2000 on needs a programmed chip key behind Chrysler’s Sentry Key immobilizer. Fourth-gen trucks use a fobik in a Wireless Ignition Node; the fifth-gen adds a proximity smart key.
- Sentry Key won’t let it start — The engine cranks but won’t run because Sentry Key isn’t reading the chip. I program a chip key coded to the truck.
- Fobik won’t wake the ignition node — On 2009-2018 (and Classic) trucks a failed fobik or dead battery stops the Wireless Ignition Node — I supply and program a fresh fobik.
- Proximity fob won’t start (5th-gen) — A weak fob battery or lost sync stops a push-button 2019-and-newer 1500 detecting it — I replace or re-program it.
- Lost all Ram keys — up to the 2024 model year, I build and program a new key from scratch, on-site — no dealer tow.
