If you drive a Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep or Ram from roughly 2008 to 2018, your key might be a FOBIK โ a chunky fob you slide into a slot in the dash and turn to start the car. The name is short for "fob integrated key", and it rolls the remote buttons, the chip and a hidden metal blade into one piece. Here is how it works and what to do if you need one cut, programmed or replaced in Winnipeg.
How a FOBIK works
A FOBIK is a bit of a hybrid. Instead of a blade you turn in the ignition, the whole fob slides into a slot on the dash and you twist it to start โ so it behaves like a traditional key even though it looks like a remote. The buttons on the front lock, unlock and open the doors or liftgate, and a transponder chip sealed inside tells the car it is allowed to start. That is three jobs in one small fob.
The hidden metal blade
Look at the top of a FOBIK and you will see a small metal blade you can slide out. That hidden blade is there for the times the fob battery or the car battery is flat: you use it to unlock the door by hand and get in. It is easy to miss, but it is the part a locksmith cuts when you need a spare or a replacement.
Which vehicles use a FOBIK
FOBIK keys are almost entirely a Chrysler-group thing (now Stellantis). You will find them on the Dodge Grand Caravan, Journey, Charger, Challenger and Durango; Chrysler Town and Country and 300; Jeep Grand Cherokee, Wrangler, Liberty and Compass; and Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 trucks โ plus the VW Routan, which was a rebadged Chrysler minivan. They come with anywhere from 3 to 7 buttons depending on the vehicle, with minivans getting the extra sliding-door and liftgate buttons.
Cutting, programming and replacing a FOBIK
For a FOBIK we cut the blade, program the chip, and sync the remote โ all on-site, no dealership trip. A spare made while you still have a working key starts from $160, and a lost-key replacement from $200; because a remote is involved, the exact programming is quoted to your vehicle. Tell us your year, make and model and we will confirm what is involved and agree the price before any work. You pay only once the new key works.
