What Is a Keyless Remote?

Mobile auto locksmith ยท Winnipeg, MB ยท Updated July 2026

A keyless remote โ€” also called a clicker, key fob or remote-entry fob โ€” is the little handheld remote that locks and unlocks your car from a distance. The one thing people get wrong about it is simple but important: a keyless remote will not drive the car. It works the doors, trunk and alarm, and some can even remote-start the engine to warm it up โ€” but you always need the real key to actually drive off. Here is exactly what it does, how it differs from a smart key, and what to do if you need one replaced or programmed in Winnipeg.

Keyless-entry remotes (clickers) for Chevrolet, Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Mazda, Nissan, Subaru and Toyota, supplied and programmed on-site in Winnipeg

What a keyless remote actually does

A keyless remote talks to the car by short-range radio. Press a button and it locks or unlocks the doors, opens the trunk or hatch, and sounds the panic alarm. Some remotes also have a remote-start button that starts the engine from a distance to warm the car up on a cold morning. Even then, the car stays immobilized and will not move until the real key is inside โ€” so the remote gets you in and comfortable, not driving.

It will not drive the car

This is the key point. With a keyless remote you still need a separate key to drive โ€” usually a metal key or a transponder (chip) key that goes into the slot and turns. Some remotes can remote-start the engine to warm up, but the car will not move until the real key is present. The remote and the key are two different things: the remote lets you in, the key drives the car. On some vehicles they are separate pieces you carry together; on others the remote clips onto the same ring as the key.

Keyless remote vs remote-head key vs smart key

It is easy to mix these up, so here is the quick version. A keyless remote is a standalone fob with lock and unlock buttons and no cut blade โ€” you pair it with a separate key. A remote-head key puts those same buttons into the plastic head of a normal cut key, so it is one piece. A smart key goes further: you keep it in your pocket and press a Start button, so it both unlocks and lets you drive away with no key to insert. If your fob lets you drive the car with a push button and no separate key, that is a smart key โ€” not a plain keyless remote.

When a keyless remote stops working

Nine times out of ten it is the small coin battery inside. If the buttons feel unresponsive or you have to stand right next to the car, pop the fob open and swap the battery first. If a fresh battery does not fix it, or the remote is lost or cracked, it needs to be replaced and re-programmed to your car โ€” the new fob has to be paired so your vehicle will accept it.

Which vehicles use them

Standalone keyless remotes are common on cars and trucks from the early 2000s through the 2010s โ€” across Chevrolet, GMC, Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Mazda, Nissan, Subaru, Toyota and many more. If you have a black clicker with lock, unlock and trunk buttons that you carry alongside a metal or chip key, that is a keyless remote.

Programming and replacing a keyless remote

We supply and program keyless-entry remotes on-site for most makes and models from 2000 and newer. Because a remote on its own has no cutting or chip work, it is usually cheaper than a full key โ€” we quote you up front once we know your year, make and model. If you also need the matching key cut or a chip key programmed, we can do that at the same visit. You pay only once everything works.

  • Locks, unlocks, opens the trunk and sounds the panic alarm โ€” from a distance
  • You still need the actual key to drive โ€” some remotes can remote-start to warm up
  • Weak range or dead buttons? Usually just the coin battery inside
  • Lost or broken remotes supplied and programmed on-site โ€” pay once it works

Frequently asked questions

What is a keyless remote?
A keyless remote - often called a clicker or key fob - is a small handheld remote that locks and unlocks your car, pops the trunk and sounds the panic alarm from a distance. It does not drive the car; you use a separate key, either a plain or a transponder (chip) key, for that, and some remotes can also remote-start the engine to warm up.
Does a keyless remote start the car?
Some do - many have a remote-start button that warms the engine up from a distance. But you cannot drive with just the remote; the car stays immobilized until the real key is inside. If your fob lets you drive off with a push button and no separate key, that is a smart key, not a plain keyless remote.
Can you program or replace a keyless remote in Winnipeg?
Yes. We supply and program keyless-entry remotes on-site for most makes from 2000 and newer. A remote on its own is usually cheaper than a key with a chip, so we quote you up front once we know your year, make and model. We come to you, check your registration and a matching photo ID, and you pay only once it works.
