Grand Caravan keys I make on-site
In my own job list the Grand Caravan sits near the top. The usual story is a family van with several drivers and one key left, or an older van bought second-hand with a single worn key. Over the years the Grand Caravan has used five kinds of key, from a plain metal blade to a push-button smart key, so the first thing I do is work out which one yours takes — from the year, a photo of the key or the VIN.
Prices are all-in, taxes included: a spare FOBIK, chip key or remote-head key starts from $160, a push-button smart key from $180, and a brand-new key when every key is gone from $200. A second key for the same van at the same visit is half price. You hear the exact number before I drive out, there is no call-out fee, and you pay only once the key works.
- Spare FOBIK — a second fob for the van while one still works, the cheapest way to do it.
- All keys lost — a new key cut to your locks and programmed to the van from scratch, right where it is parked.
- Chip and remote-head keys — for 2001–2007 vans, the blade cut and the chip programmed at the van.
- Smart keys — for the 2021–2024 Chrysler Grand Caravan with push-button start; for a 2025 or newer van, send me the year and VIN first.
- Van lockout — locked out of your Grand Caravan? I get you back in on-site, without damage.
Grand Caravan keys by generation
Here is how the key usually lines up with the year. Trim and options matter too, and a van that has had parts replaced can differ from its year, so treat the table as a guide — a photo of your key and the VIN are the final word.
| Years | Usual key | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| 1996–2000 (third generation) | Plain metal key, no chip | Cut to your locks at the van; a spare starts from $160. |
| 2001–2003 (fourth generation) | Sentry Key chip key, with a separate keyless-entry remote on many vans | The blade is cut and the chip programmed at the van, from $160. |
| 2004–2007 (fourth generation) | Remote-head key with the lock buttons in the head on vans with keyless entry; a plain chip key on others | A photo of your key tells me which one to bring; either starts from $160. |
| 2008–2010 (fifth generation) | FOBIK that slides into the ignition node on the dash and turns | From $160. Vans that went through Chrysler’s ignition-node recall take the newer fob, so I match it to the node in your van. |
| 2011–2020 (fifth generation, after the 2011 update) | FOBIK; a Keyless Enter ’n Go version on some trims | A regular FOBIK from $160; a Keyless Enter ’n Go fob from $180. |
| 2021–2024 (Chrysler Grand Caravan, Canada) | Smart key with push-button start, standard on every van | From $180 — send me the year and VIN first so I bring the right compatible smart key. |
| 2025 and newer (Chrysler Grand Caravan) | Smart key with push-button start | Send me the year and VIN first, and I tell you honestly whether I can do it. |
The shorter Dodge Caravan, sold next to the Grand Caravan until 2007, and a Chrysler Town & Country of the same year take the same kind of key. If you want the background on the one-piece fob, I wrote up how a FOBIK works.
2008–2020: the FOBIK years
Most of the Grand Caravans I work on are from these years. The FOBIK is a one-piece fob: the chip, the remote buttons and a small emergency blade for the door lock all sit in one body, and the whole thing slides into the ignition node on the dash and turns like a key. I program the new FOBIK to the van and cut its emergency blade to your door lock, so it still opens the driver’s door if the battery ever goes flat.
Two things are particular to these vans. Some 2008–2010 vans went through a Chrysler recall that replaced the ignition node and the fobs with the newer parts used from 2011, so a 2009 van can need a 2011-style fob — I go by the module in your van, not just the year on the registration. And from 2011 some trims came with Keyless Enter ’n Go: the fob looks much the same, but the van unlocks and starts with it in your pocket, and it is a different part from the regular FOBIK. A photo of your fob settles which one I bring.
2021 and newer: the Chrysler Grand Caravan
Dodge built its last Grand Caravan for the 2020 model year. In Canada the name carried on: from 2021 the Chrysler Grand Caravan is a different van, built on the Pacifica and sold in the United States as the Voyager. Its key is a proximity smart key with push-button start, standard on every one — nothing like the FOBIK in the van it replaced, so if your registration says 2021 or newer, tell me when you message.
I program the smart key to the van and cut the emergency blade hidden inside it. A spare starts from $180, and a new key when every key is gone from $200. Send me the year and VIN first so I bring the right compatible key; for a 2025 or newer van, I tell you honestly whether I can do it before anyone drives anywhere.
The security gateway and 2018–2024 Grand Caravans
From around the 2018 model year, Ram, Jeep, Dodge and Chrysler vehicles started getting a security gateway module that blocks key programming through the normal diagnostic port — which is why some locksmiths send these vans to the dealer. I carry the 12+8 bypass cable, which works on 2018–2024 models, so a 2018–2020 Dodge Grand Caravan or a 2021–2024 Chrysler Grand Caravan is an ordinary on-site job. There is more on how I handle the security gateway in my blog.
What to have ready at your van
Before any work, I always check your vehicle registration and a matching photo ID — a standard part of how I operate, to confirm the Grand Caravan is yours.
From $160 for a spare FOBIK, chip or remote-head key · from $180 for a smart key or a Keyless Enter ’n Go fob · from $200 if every key is gone.
You always get the price up front and pay only once the key works. If only the FOBIK’s case is broken, or you have already bought a fob yourself, the job costs less — see my full pricing.
1-year warranty on my work · No call-out fee — you pay only for the result.

FOBIK stuck in the ignition, or hard to turn?
This is one of the most common Grand Caravan messages I get, and not every one ends in a new key.
- The fob will not come out — check that the shifter is all the way in Park: the ignition only lets the fob go in Park. Don’t pry it out with a screwdriver; forcing it can damage the ignition node.
- It sticks or turns hard, worse in the cold — an old FOBIK wears along its edges. A new FOBIK, cut and programmed at the van, usually fixes it.
- The case is cracked but the buttons still work — a new case can be cheaper than a new fob. Send me a photo and I tell you which makes sense.
- The ignition node itself has failed — that is an ignition repair, which I don’t do. A short video of what happens usually tells me which one it is before anyone drives out.
Fob not working after a battery change?
“I put in a new battery and nothing changed” is another message I see often. Before you buy a new fob, check these:
- The battery itself — the same size as the old one, facing the same way, and really fresh: a coin cell that sat in a drawer for years can be flat out of the pack.
- The contacts — a bent or dirty contact inside the case stops the buttons even with a new battery.
- Does the van still start? — on a regular FOBIK the buttons need the battery, but the chip the ignition reads usually does not. A van that starts with dead buttons points at the remote part of the fob; I test it, then re-program or replace it.
Not sure which one it is? Send a photo of your Grand Caravan key on WhatsApp and I’ll tell you what you need. You pay only once it works.
Where I work
All of Winnipeg and the surrounding region — including Selkirk, Lockport, St. Andrews, West St. Paul, Headingley, Stony Mountain, Stonewall, Oakbank and Niverville. Inside Winnipeg the drive is free; outside Winnipeg a distance-based travel fee is part of the all-in price I give you before I set out. Open 8 AM–9 PM, 7 days a week.
A van is easy to work on wherever it is parked: your driveway, a school or workplace lot, or the street outside your home. At the van, a spare FOBIK or chip key usually takes 20–50 minutes, and a smart key or a lost-all-keys job 30–60.
Frequently asked questions
- How much is a Grand Caravan key in Winnipeg?
- A spare FOBIK for a 2008–2020 Dodge Grand Caravan starts from $160, and so does a chip key or remote-head key for a 2001–2007 van or a plain metal key for an older one. A Keyless Enter ’n Go fob, and the push-button smart key on a 2021–2024 Chrysler Grand Caravan, start from $180. All keys lost starts from $200, taxes included. A second key for the same van at the same visit is half price, you get the exact all-in price before I set out, there is no call-out fee, and you pay only once the key works.
- Which key does my Grand Caravan use?
- It goes by the year. A 1996–2000 van uses a plain metal key, a 2001–2003 van a chip key, often with a separate remote, and a 2004–2007 van a chip key or a remote-head key with the buttons in the head. From 2008 to 2020 it is a FOBIK, the one-piece fob you slide into the dash and turn. The 2021-and-newer Chrysler Grand Caravan has a smart key with push-button start. A photo of your key and the VIN settle it.
- Can you make a Grand Caravan key if I have lost all of them?
- Yes, from $200. Even with no key left, I cut a new key to your locks and program it to the van on-site, older vans included — no tow to the dealer. On a 2021–2024 Chrysler Grand Caravan, send me the year and VIN first so I bring the right compatible smart key; for a 2025 or newer van, send me the year and VIN first and I tell you honestly whether I can do it. Either way, have your vehicle registration and a matching photo ID ready.
- Can you program a key on a 2018 or newer Grand Caravan?
- Yes, up to the 2024 model year. Some 2018 and newer Ram, Jeep, Dodge and Chrysler vehicles have a security gateway that blocks key programming through the diagnostic port. I carry the 12+8 bypass cable for it, so a 2018–2020 Dodge Grand Caravan or a 2021–2024 Chrysler Grand Caravan is an ordinary on-site job. For a 2025 or newer van, send me the year and VIN first, and I tell you honestly whether I can do it.
- My FOBIK is stuck in the ignition or hard to turn. What do I do?
- First check that the shifter is all the way in Park — the ignition only releases the fob in Park — and don’t pry it out. An old FOBIK that sticks or turns hard is usually worn, and a new one, cut and programmed at the van, starts from $160. If the ignition node itself has failed, that is an ignition repair I don’t do; a short video usually tells me which it is before anyone drives out.
- Will a used or online Grand Caravan fob work?
- Sometimes, but not always. Many Chrysler fobs are locked to the first van they were programmed to and can’t be reused, and a fob that looks right can be the wrong part for your year. Send me a photo of the listing and your VIN before you buy, and I tell you whether it can work. I can program a fob you bought yourself, but there is no warranty on a fob you supplied.
