Toyota Highlander keys I make on-site
The Highlander has been on Winnipeg driveways since the 2001 model year, and over four generations it has used three kinds of key: a bladed chip key, a remote-head key with the lock buttons built into the head, and Toyota’s Smart Key with push-button start. Which one you have comes down to the year and the trim, so I confirm it from a photo or the VIN before I quote.
Prices are all-in with taxes: a remote-head or chip key starts from $160, a spare smart key from $170, and a brand-new key when every key is gone from $200. A second key made at the same visit is half price. You hear the exact number before I drive out, there is no call-out fee, and you pay only once the key works.
- Spare smart key — a second fob programmed to your Highlander, like the 2017 in my video.
- Remote-head & chip keys — cut and programmed at the car.
- Key fob & remote programming — fobs and remotes set up to your Highlander.
- Lost all keys — a brand-new key from scratch on a turn-key Highlander; on a smart-key one, send me the VIN first.

Two Highlander smart keys, programmed at the SUV

Watch: a spare smart key for a 2017 Highlander
That Highlander is from the 2014–2019 generation, with a smart key and push-button start. One fob still worked, so I programmed a second one to the SUV on the spot — two working keys instead of one.

Toyota Highlander keys by generation
Toyota has built four generations of the Highlander so far, and the key changed with them. Here is how it usually lines up. Trim and options matter as much as the year, so treat the table as a guide — your VIN is the final word.
| Years | Usual key | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| 2001–2007 (XU20, first generation) | Bladed transponder (chip) key | The blade is cut and the chip programmed at the car; a spare starts from $160. |
| 2008–2013 (XU40) | Remote-head key on most trims; Toyota Smart Key with push-button start on some higher trims | A photo of your key tells me which one you have before I come out. |
| 2014–2019 (XU50) | Remote-head key on base trims; Smart Key with push-button start on higher trims | The 2017 in my video is one of these — a spare smart key starts from $170. |
| 2020 and newer (XU70) | Smart Key with push-button start | Send me a photo of your fob and the VIN first — I tell you before I drive out whether I can do it on-site. |
Not in the table: the larger Grand Highlander, a separate model Toyota introduced in 2023. I treat it like a 2020-or-newer Highlander — a photo of the fob and the VIN first.
Smart keys on a 2020-or-newer Highlander
The fourth-generation Highlander arrived for the 2020 model year, and its smart key is the one I check before I drive out. Send me a photo of the fob you have (or had) and the 17-character VIN from your registration. From those I tell you honestly, before I leave, whether I can program yours on-site. If I can, you get the all-in price; if I cannot, I say so, and it has cost you nothing.
What to have ready at your car
Before any work, I always check your vehicle registration and a matching photo ID — a standard part of how I operate, to confirm the Highlander is yours.
From $170 for a spare Highlander smart key · from $160 for a remote-head or chip key · from $200 if every key is gone.
You always get the price up front and pay only once the key works. See my full pricing.
1-year warranty on my work · No call-out fee — you pay only for the result.
“Very pleased with the service from Gaucho keys, they were on time. Communication was excellent, they came right to my driveway and programmed my Toyota RAV4 key. I will definitely use their service again, highly recommend!!”

Highlander key or fob acting up? What I check
Not every Highlander key call ends in a new key.
- “Key not detected” on the dash — a weak coin-cell battery in the smart key is the first suspect; if a fresh one does not help, I program a replacement fob.
- Remote buttons dead — often just the battery; if the transmitter has failed, I cut and program a new remote-head key.
- Worn blade — an older chip key that sticks in the lock gets a fresh, accurately cut replacement.
Not sure which one it is? Send a photo of your Toyota Highlander key on WhatsApp and I’ll tell you what you need. You pay only once it works.
Frequently asked questions
- Can you make a spare smart key for my Toyota Highlander?
- Yes — a spare smart key starts from $170, and a second key made at the same visit is half price. The video on this page is one I programmed for a 2017 Highlander. On a 2020-or-newer Highlander, send me a photo of your fob and the VIN first — I tell you before I drive out whether I can do it on-site.
- How much is a Toyota Highlander key in Winnipeg?
- On a 2001–2007 Highlander a chip key starts from $160. On a 2008–2019 Highlander a remote-head key starts from $160, and a spare smart key on push-button trims from $170. On a 2020-or-newer Highlander a smart key starts from $170 once I have checked a photo of the fob and the VIN. All keys lost starts from $200, taxes included, and a second key at the same visit is half price. You get the exact all-in price before I set out — outside Winnipeg a distance-based travel fee is part of it — there is no call-out fee, and you pay only once the key works.
- Does my Highlander have a smart key or a regular key?
- If you start it with a button, it has a smart key; if you turn a key, it has a remote-head or chip key. Through the 2008–2019 Highlander both were sold, depending on the trim, and on a 2020-or-newer Highlander you will usually find a smart key with push-button start. A photo of your key and the VIN settle it.
- Can you make a Highlander key if I have lost all of them?
- Yes, from $200. On a Highlander with a key you turn, I cut and program a brand-new key from scratch, on-site. On a smart-key Highlander with no key left, send me the year and the VIN first — I tell you before I drive out whether I can do it on-site. Either way, have your vehicle registration and a matching photo ID ready.
- Will a Highlander key I buy online work?
- Sometimes, but ask me before you buy. A fob that looks right can be made for a different year or market, and it still has to be programmed to your Highlander. Send me a photo of the listing and your VIN, and I tell you whether it can work before you spend the money.
