Teulon sits about 47 km north of the Winnipeg city limit by road, on Highway 7, between Stonewall and Gimli, and is known around here as the Gateway to the Interlake. The highway is four-lane divided leaving the city, drops to two lanes past the Stonewall junction, runs through Gunton, and then bypasses downtown Teulon along its eastern side — which is why the fuel stops sit out on the highway, Super 7 Service at Highway 7 and 7th Street and the Petro-Pass cardlock at 145 Highway 7, while the town itself is on Main Street, where Highway 17 comes straight through and crosses it.
Teulon has been a town since 1997, with the RM of Rockwood wrapped around every side. Main Street carries most of what people drive to — the Teulon Rockwood Centennial Centre on the Main and Highway 17 corner at number 14, Shoppers Drug Mart at 44, Chicken Chef at 66, the Teulon Motor Hotel at 122 — and at its south end it runs into the arena and the 80 acres of Teulon-Rockwood Green Acres Park.
There are no meters and no parkade in Teulon: a car is in a driveway, at the curb on Main Street, or in one of a handful of lots — Bigway Foods at 36 3rd Avenue SE, the post office at 21 on the same street, the hospital and medical clinic at 162, the elementary school at 20 Beach Road and the library at 19, and the arena lot where Main Street runs into Green Acres Park.
The park lots are the ones that fill up: a dozen ball diamonds, the campground and the rodeo grounds through the summer, the arena and the curling rink through the winter — and past the town limits it is grid roads and farm yards in the RM of Rockwood. On arrival all I need is space to open a door and set up next to the vehicle.
