Getting caught without a working Kia key — a lost key, a fob that finally died, or no spare when you need one — does not have to send you to a dealership and a tow truck. Gaucho Keys is a fully mobile auto locksmith, so I drive the cutting and programming tools to you: your home, your job site, or wherever the Kia is parked across Winnipeg. I make the key or fob on the spot and you are back on the road the same visit. Kias come through my schedule constantly, so the immobilizer and smart-key systems on the Forte, Sportage, Sorento and Soul are familiar ground, and I match the right key to your model year and trim before I start.
Each job begins with a quick check of your registration and photo ID, followed by a plain all-in price so there are no surprises. Whether it is a duplicate spare or a full all-keys-lost rebuild, I do it right beside your Kia, seven days a week.
Kia keys I make on-site
Whatever your Kia needs, I come to you and handle it where you are:
- Lost all keys — a brand-new Kia key cut and programmed from scratch.
- Spare / duplicate keys — a backup before you're stuck.
- Key fob & remote programming — fobs and remotes set up to your car.
- Transponder (chip) keys — cut and programmed on-site.
I cover most Kia models, older ones included — Forte, K5, Sportage, Sorento, Soul, Rio and Seltos. Tell me your exact year and model and I'll confirm before I come out.
Kia drivers in Winnipeg call me most often to replace a lost key, cut a spare, or program a fob or transponder (chip) key for models like the Forte, Sportage and Sorento — all done on-site for most Kia models, older ones included, in a single visit.

Kia keys by year
Kia key technology has moved on a great deal since 2000. Early-2000s Kias often used a plain metal key, and many models adopted a transponder (chip) immobilizer key through the mid-2000s — in Canada, engine immobilizers became mandatory on new vehicles from around 2007. Through the 2010s, a lot of Kias shipped with a flip key that folds the cut blade into the remote, while newer model years and higher trims increasingly use a proximity smart key with push-to-start. Because it depends on the model, year and trim, I’ll confirm what your Kia uses from your year and VIN, then cut and program it on-site.
Kia keys by model and generation
Kia key systems have changed a great deal since the early 2000s, and what your car uses comes down to the model, year and trim. Use the table as a rough guide: older Kias carried a transponder (chip) key, a lot of 2010s models used a folding flip key, and proximity smart keys with push-button start have become the norm on newer trims. Where a model year could go either way, the VIN settles it — that is what I check before cutting a key.
| Model | Typical years | Usual key & entry setup |
|---|---|---|
| Forte | 2010–2013 | Transponder (chip) key; blade key with a remote |
| Forte | 2014–2018 | Flip key common; proximity smart key with push-button start offered on higher trims from 2014 |
| Forte | 2019–present | Proximity smart key with push-button start on most trims; some base trims use a flip key |
| Sportage | 2005–2010 | Transponder or flip key with a remote |
| Sportage | 2011–2016 | Smart key with push-button start offered on the third-generation (SL) higher trims |
| Sportage | 2017–present | Proximity smart key with push-button start widely used |
| Sorento | 2003–2010 | Transponder (chip) key with a remote |
| Sorento | 2011–2020 | Smart key with push-button start on most trims (the base LX kept a standard key for a while) |
| Sorento | 2021–present | Proximity smart key standard, with a Digital Key option |
| Soul | 2010–present | Transponder or flip key on base trims, proximity smart key on higher or newer trims |
| Rio | 2006–present | Transponder (chip) key, later a flip key; smart key on recent higher trims |
| Seltos / K5 | 2020–present | Proximity smart key with push-button start |
These years overlap on purpose — the same Kia model can leave the factory with either a flip key or a smart key depending on trim, so I always confirm against your VIN rather than guess from the badge. That way the key I cut and program is the exact one your Kia is expecting.
Common Kia models I cut and program
Kia Forte — a frequent call for me. Early Fortes used a transponder chip key, the 2014–2018 cars are often flip keys, and a proximity smart key with push-button start has been available since 2014 on higher trims and standard on most 2019 and newer Fortes. I cut spares, replace lost fobs and handle all-keys-lost jobs.
Kia Sportage — older Sportages ran a transponder or flip key, while the smart key with push-button start arrived on higher trims of the 2010–2016 (SL) generation and became common from the 2017 (QL) cars on. I program bladed keys and push-to-start fobs alike. See my Kia Sportage key page for more.
Kia Sorento — the Sorento offered a smart key with push-button start on most trims from 2011 (the base LX kept a standard key for a time), building on the transponder keys of the 2000s. Newer Sorentos use a proximity smart key as standard, and I cover spares, replacements and lost-key jobs.
Soul, Rio, Seltos and K5 — from the flip keys on many Souls and Rios to the proximity smart keys on the Seltos and K5, I handle the rest of the Kia range as well. Give me the model and year and I will confirm the exact key first.
What changes the price of a Kia key
The cost of a Kia key comes down to a handful of factors. Key type leads the list: a transponder (chip) key is simpler and cheaper than a proximity smart key, which relies on a pricier push-to-start fob. It also matters whether you still hold a working key — a spare cut from an existing key costs less than an all-keys-lost job, where I build a new key and reprogram the immobilizer with none to copy from. Your Kia's model and year and the number of keys you want programmed do the rest.
Every quote I give is all-in with taxes included, and you get it before I start — no surprises on the driveway. There is no call-out fee, and you pay only once the key starts the car or the push-button start reads the fob. Payment can be Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Interac e-Transfer or cash.
Mobile Kia key service vs the dealership
A Kia dealer can supply a key, but it typically means a tow to the shop, a wait of several days for the part, and dealership pricing. I flip that around: I come to you, program the key beside your car, and skip the tow and the wait. The price is usually below the dealer quote, you keep your vehicle with you the whole time, I confirm ownership before starting, and you leave with a working key the same visit — evenings and weekends included.
Worried about the Kia theft wave?
The viral “Kia Boys” videos from the United States showed cars being started with little more than a USB cable. What those clips rarely mention: the method relied on US-market Kias — mostly 2011–2021 models with a metal turn-key ignition — that were built without an engine immobilizer. Canadian rules are different: under CMVSS 114, every new passenger vehicle sold in Canada has been required to carry an engine immobilizer since September 1, 2007, and Kia’s Canadian-market vehicles have been equipped accordingly. That means the USB trick that spread on US social media generally does not apply to a Kia originally sold in Canada — the engine expects a coded key before it will run.
Where I fit in is straightforward: I’m a key service, not a security company. I cut and program the transponder (chip) keys and smart keys that pair with that immobilizer, and I can cut you a spare so a lost key stays a small problem. Not sure what your model year uses? Send me your VIN and I’ll check.

Frequently asked questions
- Can you make a Kia key if I've lost all of them?
- Yes. Even with no working key, I can generate and program a brand-new Kia key from scratch on-site for most models, older ones included. That is the all-keys-lost situation, and it is one of the calls I handle most. Send me your exact year and model and I'll confirm what your Kia needs before I head out.
- Do you program Kia key fobs and remotes?
- Yes. I program Kia key fobs, remotes and transponder (chip) keys on-site for most models, older ones included, whether you want a spare added or a replacement after losing a fob.
- Does my Kia Sorento use a smart key?
- Most do from 2011. The Sorento offered a smart key with push-button start on most trims from 2011, although the base LX kept a standard key for a while; Sorentos from 2003 to 2010 use a transponder (chip) key with a remote, and from 2021 a proximity smart key is standard, with a Digital Key option. Where a year could go either way, the VIN settles it.
- How much is a Kia car key in Winnipeg?
- A transponder (chip) or flip key — older Fortes, Sportages and Sorentos, and many Souls and Rios — starts from $160; a proximity smart key with push-button start — most Sorentos from 2011, most Fortes from 2019 and higher-trim Sportages from 2017, the Seltos and the K5 — starts from $170; and all keys lost starts from $200, taxes in. I confirm the key from your VIN before I come out.
- Does my Canadian Kia have an immobilizer?
- Yes in most cases. Canadian regulations (CMVSS 114) have required engine immobilizers on all new passenger vehicles built after September 1, 2007, so a Kia sold new in Canada from the late 2000s onward has one. Older models and US-imported vehicles can differ, so send me your year, model or VIN and I'll confirm what your Kia uses.
- Do I need to take my Kia to a dealership for a replacement key?
- No. As a mobile locksmith I come to you anywhere in Winnipeg and cut and program your Kia key beside the car, which is usually cheaper than the dealer and means no tow truck and no days without your vehicle. I cover lost keys, spares, fobs, transponder keys and smart keys.
By key type
I also cover specific key types: transponder / chip keys, smart / push-to-start keys, and all keys lost. Popular model I cover: Kia Sportage car keys. See my Kia key cost guide for up-front prices by key type.
