Locking yourself out of a Genesis, losing your only smart key, or realising you never had a spare is stressful — but it does not have to mean a flatbed to the dealership and days without your car. Gaucho Keys is a fully mobile auto locksmith: we bring the key-cutting and programming gear to your driveway, your workplace or a parking lot anywhere in Winnipeg, build the smart key on the spot, and you drive away the same visit. Because Genesis is Hyundai Motor Group’s luxury brand, its cars share the same proven smart-key and immobilizer platforms we already program week in and week out on Hyundai and Kia, so we match the right proximity key to your exact model and year before we ever pick up a tool.
Every job starts with a brief check of your registration and photo ID, then a clear all-in price so you know the cost before any work begins. From a spare smart key for a G70 or GV70 to a full all-keys-lost rebuild on a G80 or GV80, we handle it beside your Genesis, seven days a week — evenings and weekends included, so a lost key does not have to derail your week.
Genesis keys we make on-site
Whatever your Genesis needs, we come to you and handle it where you are:
- Lost all keys โ a brand-new Genesis smart key generated and programmed from scratch.
- Spare / duplicate smart keys โ a proximity fob backup before you’re stuck.
- Smart key & proximity fob programming โ push-to-start fobs matched to your car.
- Transponder (chip) keys โ for the older Genesis Coupe and early sedans, cut and programmed on-site.
Genesis has been Hyundai Motor Group’s stand-alone luxury brand since 2015, and every model in the current line-up — the G70, G80 and G90 sedans and the GV60, GV70 and GV80 SUVs — uses a proximity smart key with push-button start. We also cover the earlier Hyundai-badged Genesis sedan and Genesis Coupe. Tell us your exact year and model and we’ll confirm what your car needs before we come out.
Genesis drivers in Winnipeg call us most often to replace a lost smart key, add a spare fob, or rebuild the keys after all of them are gone — all done on-site in a single visit, beside the car.
If you only have one smart key left, it is worth adding a spare before anything goes wrong. On a proximity-key car, losing your last fob turns into an all-keys-lost job, where we have to generate a new key and reprogram the immobilizer — more involved, and more expensive, than simply cutting and coding a second fob while you still have a working one in hand. A spare made now is the cheaper insurance, and every second key is 50% off.

Genesis keys by type
Almost every Genesis on the road uses a proximity smart key, but the older Genesis Coupe and some early sedans used a transponder (chip) key. Those are the two types you’ll usually find on a Genesis:
Genesis keys by model and generation
Genesis has used a couple of key systems over its history, and the right one depends on your model and year. The table below is a general guide to what most Canadian-market Genesis vehicles carry — from the transponder (chip) key of the Genesis Coupe, through the smart proximity keys the brand has used on its sedans since the Hyundai-badged days, to the push-button smart keys and phone-based Digital Key on the newest SUVs. When in doubt we go by your VIN, which tells us exactly what your Genesis expects.
| Model | Typical years | Usual key & entry setup |
|---|---|---|
| Genesis sedan (Hyundai-badged) | 2009–2016 | Proximity smart key with push-button start on most trims; a transponder (chip) key on some early builds |
| Genesis Coupe | 2010–2016 | Transponder (chip) blade key with a separate remote — no push-button start |
| G80 | 2017–present | Proximity smart key with push-button start; Genesis Digital Key on recent model years |
| G90 | 2017–present | Proximity smart key with push-button start |
| G70 | 2019–present | Proximity smart key with push-button start |
| GV80 | 2021–present | Proximity smart key with push-button start |
| GV70 | 2022–present | Proximity smart key with push-button start; Genesis Digital Key available |
| GV60 (electric) | 2023–present | Proximity smart key with push-button start; Digital Key and biometric options |
Years are approximate and overlap between generations and trims. That is exactly why we confirm from the VIN before we cut or program anything, so the key we make is the one your Genesis will actually accept.
Common Genesis models we cut and program
Genesis G80 — the G80 began life as the Hyundai-badged Genesis sedan and became a Genesis-branded model for 2017. Every G80 uses a proximity smart key with push-button start, and recent model years add Genesis Digital Key so a phone can act as a key. We cut spares, replace lost fobs and build a brand-new key when every key is gone.
Genesis G70 & G90 — the compact G70, which reached North America for the 2019 model year, and the flagship G90 both use proximity smart keys with push-button start. Whether you need a second fob for the household or a full all-keys-lost rebuild, we program it beside the car in a single visit.
Genesis GV70, GV80 & GV60 — the brand’s SUVs, the GV80 (2021), the GV70 (2022) and the all-electric GV60 (2023), all use a proximity smart key with push-button start, and several carry Genesis Digital Key. We add spare smart keys and handle all-keys-lost jobs on all three, matching the fob to your exact model year.
Older Hyundai-badged Genesis — the 2009–2016 Genesis sedan used a smart proximity key with push-button start on most trims, while the 2010–2016 Genesis Coupe used a transponder (chip) blade key with a separate remote. We still cut and program both. Tell us the model and year and we’ll confirm the exact key before we come out.
What affects the price of a Genesis key
A few things decide what a Genesis key costs. The biggest is the type of key: nearly every Genesis uses a proximity smart key, which is a more expensive fob than a basic transponder (chip) key, so a modern Genesis key sits at the smart-key price. Whether you still have a working key matters too — cutting a spare while you have a key in hand is cheaper than an all-keys-lost job, where we generate a new key and reprogram the immobilizer from scratch. Your model and year, and how many keys you want programmed, round out the price.
Whatever the job, every price we give is all-in with taxes included, and you hear it up front before any work starts. There is no call-out fee — you pay only once the smart key opens the doors and the push-button start recognises the fob. We accept Visa, Mastercard, Interac e-Transfer or cash.
Mobile Genesis key service vs the dealership
Genesis dealers are few and far between in Manitoba, so ordering a key through one usually means arranging a flatbed, waiting several days for the fob to come in, and paying dealer rates. Because we come to you and program the smart key on-site, there is no tow truck and no waiting for parts, and the price is typically lower than the dealer quote. You stay with your vehicle the whole time, we verify ownership before we start, and you drive away with a working key the same visit — evenings and weekends included, seven days a week.
Genesis and the Hyundai/Kia theft story
You may have seen the viral “USB cable” theft videos from the United States. The vehicles in those clips were US-market Hyundai and Kia models from roughly 2011–2022 built without an engine immobilizer — mostly base trims with an old-style metal turn-key ignition. Genesis was never part of that group: every Genesis uses a proximity smart key with push-button start and a factory immobilizer, and in Canada federal rule CMVSS 114 has required an immobilizer on every new passenger vehicle built after September 1, 2007. So the USB trick that spread on US social media simply does not apply to a Genesis — the immobilizer expects a coded smart key before the engine will run.
Our part is simple: we’re a key service, not a security company. We program the smart keys that work with that immobilizer, and we can make you a spare so a lost key stays a small problem. Unsure about your model? Send us your VIN and we’ll check.
“I had a very good experience using the service. Everything went well and done as promised! I’m giving 5 stars.”

Frequently asked questions
- Can you make a Genesis key if I’ve lost all of them?
- Yes. Even with no working key, we can generate and program a brand-new Genesis smart key from scratch, on-site. This ‘all keys lost’ situation is one of the most common calls we get. Tell us your exact year and model and we’ll confirm what your Genesis needs before we come out.
- Do you program Genesis smart keys and proximity fobs?
- Yes. We program Genesis proximity smart keys and push-to-start fobs on-site, whether you need a spare added or a replacement after a lost fob. For the older Genesis Coupe we also cut and program transponder (chip) keys.
- Which Genesis models do you cover?
- The current G70, G80 and G90 sedans and the GV60, GV70 and GV80 SUVs, plus the earlier Hyundai-badged Genesis sedan (2009–2016) and Genesis Coupe (2010–2016). If you’re not sure, send us the year and VIN and we’ll confirm.
- How much is a Genesis car key in Winnipeg?
- An all-keys-lost Genesis key starts from $200 all-in and a spare smart key from $170, taxes included. You always get the full price up front and pay only once the key works.
- Does my Genesis have an immobilizer?
- Yes. Every Genesis uses a factory engine immobilizer, and Canadian rule CMVSS 114 has required one on all new passenger vehicles built after September 1, 2007. The smart key has to be recognised before the engine will start, which is exactly the system we program.
- Can you program a Genesis smart key with push-to-start?
- Yes. Every model in the Genesis line-up (the G70, G80, G90, GV60, GV70 and GV80) uses a proximity smart key with push-button start, and we can add a spare smart key or build a new one if yours is lost, all on-site.
