Lexus carried Toyota’s immobilizer from the late 1990s and pioneered SmartAccess on its flagship sedans in the early-to-mid 2000s, then rolled proximity push-button start down to the ES (from the 2007 model year) and the RX (standard from 2010). Because the platform is shared with Toyota, most RX and ES keys are an on-site job for me, not a dealer tow-in. For a smart key on a current RX (2023 and newer) or ES (2019 and newer) — a second one, or one made with no working key left — send me the VIN and, if you still have one, a photo of your fob first — I tell you before I drive out whether I can do it on-site.
Lexus chip keys, remotes and SmartAccess fobs
Not sure which key you have? A transponder (chip) key looks like a normal blade but hides a chip, and the engine will not start unless the immobilizer recognizes it. A remote-head key builds the lock and unlock buttons into that chipped key. A SmartAccess fob is the proximity remote you keep in your pocket, paired with push-button start. Most Lexus models from 2000 and newer use one of these, and I cut, pair or register all three on-site. SmartAccess card keys and valet keys
Some Lexus models also came with a slim SmartAccess card key that slides into a wallet, plus a metal valet key kept for the glovebox and boot. If you have lost the card, the valet key or the main fob, I can supply and program a replacement for whichever one is missing — you do not have to replace the whole set. How I program a Lexus key on-site
