When you need a replacement it is important to match that exact style and the right chip — I identify it from your year, model and VIN so the new key looks and works like the original.
Every Subaru from the late 2000s onward relies on a factory immobilizer, so the transponder chip inside the key has to be programmed to the car before the engine will run. I do that programming on-site with professional diagnostic equipment, cutting the blade to code and pairing the chip — and for Keyless Access models I register the smart fob so push-button start and passive entry work again. Replacing a Subaru key at the dealership usually means towing a car that will not start, leaving it for the day and waiting for a key to be ordered. How to tell which Subaru key you have
Not sure what your Subaru uses? These are the styles you will see, and a quick photo on WhatsApp settles it:
- Plain metal key. No buttons and no plastic head — found on older base-trim Subarus from the early 2000s and before.
- Transponder chip key. A key with a chip in the head but no remote buttons, common on mid-2000s models once the immobilizer arrived.
- Remote-head key. A single fixed key head with lock, unlock and panic buttons and a non-folding blade. This is the classic North American Subaru key from the late 2000s into the 2010s.
