Acura followed Honda’s immobilizer path closely: a transponder (chip) key became the norm across the range through the 2000s, and Acura was an early adopter of proximity entry — the RL carried a Keyless Access system in the mid-2000s before push-button start spread to the MDX, RDX and TLX. Because the electronics are shared with Honda, an all-keys-lost job on an MDX or RDX is a routine on-site procedure for me rather than a dealer-only tow-in.
Acura chip keys, remotes and smart keys
Not sure what you have? Here is the short version. A transponder (chip) key has a plastic head hiding a chip; it looks like an ordinary key, but the engine will not start unless the chip is recognized by the immobilizer. A remote-head key adds lock, unlock and sometimes remote-start buttons to that same chipped key. A proximity smart key is the fob you leave in your pocket — you press a button on the dash to start the car. Most Acuras from 2000 and newer use one of these three, and all three are things I cut, pair or register on-site. If you send a photo of your key on WhatsApp, I can usually tell you which type it is and quote it before I come out.
How I program an Acura key on-site
Every job starts the same way: I confirm your Acura’s year, model and VIN, then match the correct blade, chip or smart-key part before I load the van.
