Losing your only Hyundai key — or discovering you never had a spare — is stressful, but it does not have to mean a tow to the dealership and days without your car. Gaucho Keys is a fully mobile auto locksmith: I bring the key-cutting and programming equipment to your driveway, your workplace or a parking lot anywhere in Winnipeg, make the key or fob on the spot, and you drive away the same visit. Because I work on Hyundai keys week in and week out, I know the immobilizer and transponder systems used across the Elantra, Tucson, Sonata and Santa Fe, and I match the right key or smart fob to your exact year and trim before I ever pick up a tool.

Every job starts with a quick check of your registration and photo ID, then a clear all-in price so you know the cost before any work begins. From a simple spare to a full all-keys-lost rebuild, I handle it beside your Hyundai, seven days a week.

Hyundai keys I make on-site

Whatever your Hyundai needs, I come to you and handle it where you are:

  • Lost all keys — a brand-new Hyundai key cut and programmed from scratch.
  • Spare / duplicate keys — a backup before you're stuck.
  • Key fob & remote programming — fobs and remotes set up to your car.
  • Transponder (chip) keys — cut and programmed on-site.

I cover most Hyundai models, older ones included — Elantra, Sonata, Tucson, Santa Fe, Accent, Kona and Venue. Tell me your exact year and model and I'll confirm before I come out.

Hyundai drivers in Winnipeg call me most often to replace a lost key, cut a spare, or program a fob or transponder (chip) key for models like the Elantra, Tucson and Sonata — all done on-site for most Hyundai models, older ones included, in a single visit.

How it works

  • Message, texttext or call. Send your Hyundai’s year and model — a photo of the key helps.

  • I come to you and cut & program your Hyundai key on-site, in a single visit.

What to have ready at your car

Before any work, I always check your vehicle registration and a matching photo ID. It's a standard part of how I operate — to confirm the vehicle is yours and keep everything above board.

Hyundai keys by year

Hyundai key technology has shifted a lot since 2000. Early-2000s Hyundais often used a plain metal key, and many models moved to a transponder (chip) immobilizer key through the mid-2000s — in Canada, engine immobilizers became mandatory on new vehicles from around 2007. Through the 2010s, plenty of Hyundais came with a flip key that folds the cut blade into the remote, while newer model years and higher trims increasingly use a proximity smart key with push-to-start. Because the exact setup depends on the model, year and trim, I’ll confirm what your Hyundai uses from your year and VIN, then cut and program it on-site.

Hyundai keys by model and generation

Hyundai has used several key systems over the years, and the right one depends on your model, year and trim. The table below is a general guide to what most Canadian-market Hyundais carry — from the plain transponder (chip) keys of the early 2000s, through the folding flip keys of the 2010s, to the proximity smart keys with push-button start on many recent models. When in doubt I go by your VIN, which tells me exactly what your Hyundai expects.

ModelTypical yearsUsual key & entry setup
Elantra2001–2012Transponder (chip) key; blade key, later paired with a separate or flip remote
Elantra2013–presentFlip key common; proximity smart key with push-button start offered on higher trims from about 2013, standard on most recent trims
Sonata2006–2010Transponder (chip) key with a remote
Sonata2011–presentProximity smart key with push-button start offered from the 2011 (YF) generation onward
Tucson2005–2015Transponder or flip key with a remote
Tucson2016–presentSmart key with push-button start on higher trims from the 2016 generation; a Digital Key option was added from 2022
Santa Fe2007–2012Transponder (chip) key with a separate remote
Santa Fe2013–presentProximity smart key with push-button start widely available
Accent2000s–2010sTransponder (chip) key, later a flip key on some trims
Kona / Venue2018–presentFlip key on base trims, proximity smart key on higher trims

Years are approximate and overlap between generations and trims — the same model year can leave the factory with either a flip key or a smart key depending on how it was optioned. That is exactly why I confirm from the VIN before I cut anything, so the key I make is the one your Hyundai will actually accept.

Common Hyundai models I cut and program

Hyundai Elantra — one of the most common cars I am called out for in Winnipeg. Early Elantras used a transponder chip key, while models from about 2013 added a proximity smart key with push-button start on the Limited and higher trims, and recent Elantras carry a smart key on most trims. I can cut a spare, add a fob, or build a brand-new key when every key is gone. See my dedicated Hyundai Elantra key page for model-specific detail.

Hyundai Tucson — the Tucson moved from a transponder or flip key on older generations to a smart key with push-button start on higher trims of the 2016 generation, and proximity smart keys are common on the newest years, with a Digital Key option from 2022. Whether you have a bladed key or a push-to-start fob, I program it on-site. There is more on my Hyundai Tucson key page.

Hyundai Sonata — Sonatas from the 2000s used a transponder chip key, and the 2011 (YF) generation introduced the smart proximity key with push-button start that later Sonatas carried forward. I handle spares, replacement fobs and all-keys-lost jobs for the Sonata, matching the fob to your exact model year.

Santa Fe, Accent, Kona and Venue — from the transponder keys on older Santa Fes and Accents to the smart keys on the newer Kona and Venue, I cover the rest of the Hyundai line-up too. Tell me the model and year and I will confirm the exact key before I come out. For the Santa Fe there is more on my Hyundai Santa Fe key page.

What affects the price of a Hyundai key

A few things decide what a Hyundai key costs. The biggest is the type of key: a basic transponder (chip) key is less involved than a proximity smart key with push-button start, which uses a more expensive fob. Whether you still have a working key matters too — cutting a spare while you have a key in hand is cheaper than an all-keys-lost job, where I generate a new key and reprogram the immobilizer from scratch. Your model and year, and how many keys you want programmed, round out the price.

Whatever the job, every price I give is all-in with taxes included, and you hear it up front before any work starts. There is no call-out fee — you pay only once the key turns in the ignition or the push-button start recognizes the fob. I accept Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Interac e-Transfer or cash.

Mobile Hyundai key service vs the dealership

A Hyundai dealership can order you a key, but it usually means towing the car in, waiting several days for the key to arrive, and paying dealer rates. Because I come to you and program the key on-site, there is no tow truck and no waiting for parts, and the price is typically lower than the dealer quote. You stay with your vehicle the whole time, I verify ownership before I start, and you drive away with a working key the same visit — evenings and weekends included, seven days a week.

Worried about the Hyundai theft wave?

You may have seen the viral “USB cable” theft videos from the United States. The context that usually gets lost: those clips involved vehicles sold in the US — part of a group of millions of 2011–2022 Hyundai and Kia cars built for the US market without an engine immobilizer, mostly base trims with a metal turn-key ignition. Canada took a different path: under federal rule CMVSS 114, every new passenger vehicle sold in Canada has been required to have an engine immobilizer since September 1, 2007, and Hyundai’s Canadian-market vehicles come equipped accordingly. So the USB trick that spread on US social media generally does not apply to a Hyundai originally sold in Canada — the immobilizer expects a coded key before the engine will run.

My part is simple: I’m a key service, not a security company. I cut and program the transponder (chip) keys and smart keys that work with that immobilizer, and I can make a spare so a lost key stays a small problem. Unsure about your year? Send me your VIN and I’ll check.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a Hyundai key if I've lost all of them?
Yes. Even with no working key, I can generate and program a brand-new Hyundai key from scratch on-site for most models, older ones included. This is the 'all keys lost' situation, and it is one of the most common calls I get. Tell me your exact year and model and I'll confirm what your Hyundai needs before I come out.
My Hyundai has a flip key, not a push-button fob. Do you make those too?
Yes. Plenty of Hyundais from the 2010s came with a flip key that folds the cut blade into the remote, and I cut and program those on-site as well as smart keys. Because the same model year can leave the factory with either a flip key or a smart key depending on how it was optioned, I confirm from your VIN which one your Hyundai will actually accept.
Does my Hyundai Tucson have a smart key?
It depends on the generation and trim. Tucsons from 2005 to 2015 use a transponder or flip key with a remote, while the 2016 generation brought a smart key with push-button start on higher trims, and a Digital Key option was added from 2022. The same model year can leave the factory with either a flip key or a smart key, so I confirm from your VIN.
How much is a Hyundai car key in Winnipeg?
A spare chip key for an older Elantra, Accent, a 2006–2010 Sonata or a 2007–2012 Santa Fe, or a flip key for a 2013-and-newer Elantra or a 2005–2015 Tucson, starts from $160. A proximity smart key for a push-button Sonata (from 2011), Santa Fe (from 2013), higher-trim Tucson (from 2016), Kona or Venue starts from $170, and an all-keys-lost job from $200. All-in with taxes, given before I come out, and you pay only once the key works.
Does my Canadian Hyundai have an immobilizer?
Yes in most cases. Canadian regulations (CMVSS 114) have required engine immobilizers on all new passenger vehicles built after September 1, 2007, so a Hyundai sold new in Canada from the late 2000s onward has one. Older models and vehicles imported from the US can differ, so send me your year, model or VIN and I'll confirm what your Hyundai uses.
Can you program a Hyundai smart key with push-to-start?
Yes. Many Hyundais from the 2010s onward use a proximity smart key with push-button start. The Sonata offered it from the 2011 model year and the Elantra from around 2013 on higher trims, and I can add a spare smart key or build a new one if yours is lost, all on-site.
