The second is a proximity smart key: a fob you keep in your pocket that unlocks the doors and lets you start the car with a push button. The older Suzukis and the base SX4, Swift and Grand Vitara trims are turn-key, while the Kizashi and some higher-trim SX4 and Grand Vitara models moved to a proximity smart key.

Either way, a Suzuki built since the early 2000s carries a factory immobilizer, so the chip in the key or fob has to be programmed to the car before it will start. How to tell which Suzuki key you have

• Transponder chip key. A key with a chip hidden in the head but no remote buttons, seen on early Aerio, Esteem and Vitara models.
• Remote-head or flip key. A key you turn in the ignition, with lock and unlock buttons in the head; on flip versions the blade folds into the fob. Common on the Swift, SX4 and later Grand Vitara.
• Proximity smart fob. A buttoned fob with no blade to turn — you keep it on you, and on the Kizashi you press a start button. Used on the Kizashi and some higher-trim SX4 and Grand Vitara.
