Subaru Crosstrek keys we make on-site
We cover the three things Crosstrek owners call about: a lost key, a spare made before something goes wrong, and a car with no working key left at all. Everything happens at your vehicle, whether that is your driveway, a work lot, or a parking spot out by Birds Hill. There is no towing and no call-out fee, and No Fix = No Pay.
Which key you need depends on the year and how the car was optioned. Older Crosstreks use a chipped metal key with the lock buttons built into the plastic head, so the blade has to be cut to your car and the chip and remote programmed to it. Newer ones use a proximity smart key: the fob stays in your pocket and you press the start button. The easiest way to tell us which you have is a photo of your dash. We cut and program both, and we can add a second key while we are already there.
- Lost all keys — a brand-new Subaru Crosstrek key cut and programmed from scratch.
- Spare / duplicate keys — a backup before you are stuck.
- Key fob & remote programming — fobs and remotes set up to your Subaru Crosstrek.
- Chip & push-to-start keys — cut and programmed on the spot, depending on your year and trim.

Subaru Crosstrek keys by year
First-generation cars (2013 to 2017, badged XV Crosstrek on the early years) usually use a chipped metal key. Most came as a remote head key, meaning one piece with the lock, unlock and panic buttons in the head and a transponder chip inside; the blade is usually stamped G. The blade gets cut, then the chip and the remote are programmed to the car. Do not assume, though: Keyless Access with Push-Button Start was a factory option on 2016 and 2017 Premium and Limited cars, it was standard on the 2017 Premium Special Edition, and the 2014 to 2016 XV Crosstrek Hybrid could be ordered with it. Those cars take a proximity smart key instead, so check your dash for a start button.
Second-generation cars (2018 to 2023) split two ways, and it goes by option package rather than by trim. Cars with a key slot use a remote head key, but with a different chip and blade profile than the older cars, usually stamped H, so a 2016 key will not work in a 2019. Cars ordered with Keyless Access use a proximity smart key with a small metal blade hidden inside it for the door. That was standard on Limited, but Premium and Sport could be optioned with it, so plenty of mid-trim Crosstreks have a smart key. The dash tells us more than the badge does.
Third-generation cars (2024 and up) mostly run the proximity smart key. Push-button start is standard from the Premium trim up in the US lineup and it is on most Canadian trims as well, though the entry trim can still be a keyed car. Tell us whether yours has a START button or a slot you turn a key in and we will bring the right blank. We make keys for every Crosstrek generation, first year to current.

Frequently asked questions
- How much does a Subaru Crosstrek key cost in Winnipeg?
- A spare or duplicate Crosstrek key starts at $160, and a push-to-start smart key starts at $170. If every key is gone, all-keys-lost starts at $200, and a lockout starts at $150. A second key cut and programmed on the same visit is half price. Cost varies by make, model and year, so call us and we will quote you before we come out.
- Can you make a Crosstrek key if I lost all of them?
- Yes. We program a new key to the car without needing an original to copy, which is the all-keys-lost job, from $200. It works on Crosstreks from every generation, chipped key or push-to-start. We do it at your car, so there is no tow to a dealership. Dig out your registration and photo ID before we get there; proving the car is yours matters most on this job, because there is no original key to copy.
- Does my Crosstrek have a chipped key or a smart key?
- Look at your dash, not your trim badge. A slot you turn a key in means a chipped metal key. A START button, with the fob staying in your pocket, means a proximity smart key. Trim is not a reliable guide on a Crosstrek: Keyless Access was a factory option package on Premium and Sport cars, not just standard equipment on Limited, so two Crosstreks of the same year and trim can take different keys. Send us a photo of the dash and the key and we will tell you which one you have.
- My Crosstrek fob quit in the cold. Do I need a new key?
- Usually not, since a flat coin battery is the most common cause when a fob stops working in a Winnipeg cold snap. A dying battery shortens the range first, so you notice yourself standing closer to the door before it gives up. If the fob is dead you can still get in with the small metal blade inside a smart key, and on most cars hold the fob against the start button to start it. Call us if a fresh battery does not fix it.
