Charleswood is the south-west corner of Winnipeg, bounded by Roblin Boulevard and the Assiniboine River to the north, Shaftesbury Boulevard to the east, Wilkes Avenue to the south and the Perimeter Highway to the west. Roblin Boulevard is the main street here, the one with the old welcome sign that calls Charleswood the Suburb Beautiful, while Grant Avenue and Charleswood Road carry most of the rest of the traffic and the Charleswood Bridge brings Moray Street over the river onto Roblin near Haney Street.
The 700-acre Assiniboine Forest sits inside the neighbourhood between Chalfont Road and Shaftesbury Boulevard, and the 6.5 km Harte Trail follows an old rail bed across half a dozen residential streets. Roblin Park, Varsity View and Marlton are the older districts, Westdale has its own school and community centre, and RidgeWood West is the newer build-out toward the Perimeter.
Charleswood driveways run long and a lot of them sit back behind an open ditch instead of a curb, so much of the work here happens on private property, beside a detached garage or on the gravel shoulder of a street that never got a sidewalk. The rest is flat-lot work: Charleswood Square at 4910 Roblin Boulevard, the Safeway lot at Charleswood Centre on Grant Avenue, and the Eric Coy Arena lot on Oakdale Drive on a hockey night.
If a key goes missing along the Harte Trail, the car is usually still sitting where it was left on Elmhurst, Cathcart or Ridgewood, and that is where I meet you. Everything is cut and programmed at the vehicle, so nothing has to be moved first.
