Transcona is Winnipeg's north-east corner, running east from Lagimodiere Boulevard out to the Perimeter Highway, with Dugald Road across the south end. Regent Avenue West is the spine: big-box lots at the Lagimodiere end, then the old townsite around Bond Street, where the archway crosses the road beside Transcona Centennial Square at 135 Regent and the Transcona Museum at 141, and at Plessis Road the street carries on as Regent Avenue East.
Plessis Road, Day Street and Ravenhurst Street are the main cross streets, while Kildare Avenue and Pandora Avenue run parallel to Regent — the CN 2747 steam locomotive sits in Rotary Heritage Park at 735 Kildare Avenue West, and the CN Transcona Shops still line Pandora Avenue West. Housing goes from the older bungalows on the grid between Regent and Pandora out to the newer streets in Canterbury Park, Mission Gardens and Devonshire Park in west Transcona.
On the old grid around Regent and Bond, a lot of the houses have the garage off the back lane, so the car is usually sitting in the lane or at the curb rather than in a driveway. The newer streets are the other way round — driveways and attached garages in Canterbury Park, Mission Gardens and Devonshire Park off Transcona Boulevard.
The rest is parking lots, and I work in all of them: the Safeway on Kildare Avenue East, the Costco at the Lagimodiere end of Regent Avenue West, the school lots at Murdoch MacKay on Redonda Street and Transcona Collegiate on Winona Street, and the rink lots at East End on Pandora Avenue East and Park City West on Sanford Fleming Road. Wherever the car is, I only need room to open a door and sit with it.
