What to Bring When Getting a New Car Key Made

Mobile auto locksmith · Winnipeg, MB · Updated June 2026

The two things to have ready are your vehicle registration and a matching photo ID, plus the year, make and model of your car. With those in hand, getting a new key made goes quickly and smoothly.

Registration and matching photo ID

Before any work, I check your vehicle registration against a photo ID with a matching name. This is my standard procedure to confirm the vehicle is yours and keep everything legitimate. It is the same for everyone, so having both ready when I arrive saves time. If the car is registered to a spouse or family member, just let me know in advance so we can sort out the details.

Your vehicle details

Knowing the exact year, make and model lets me confirm what kind of key you need and quote an accurate price. Because most keys from 2000 and newer have a chip that must be programmed, the price can depend on the vehicle, so the more specific you are, the better. If you can find it, the VIN is helpful too, but it is not essential.

  • Your vehicle registration
  • A photo ID with a matching name
  • The year, make and model of the car
  • Any working key you still have, if it is a spare you want
  • The VIN if you have it handy (optional)

An existing key helps for spares

If you are after a spare or duplicate and still have a working key, bring it out for me. Having an original makes a duplicate more straightforward, and a spare starts from $160. If your only key is lost and you have none, that is a lost car key replacement from $200, and I can still make a key from scratch.

What to expect on price and payment

I agree the price with you up front, before I start, so there are no surprises and no hidden fees. You pay only once the new key actually works. Payment can be Visa, Mastercard, Interac e-Transfer or cash, whatever is easiest for you.

I am a mobile locksmith covering Winnipeg and the surrounding area, including Selkirk, Lockport, St. Andrews, West Saint Paul, Headingley, Stony Mountain and Oakbank. I come to your home, work or roadside, so the main thing on your end is simply having your ID, registration and vehicle details ready when I get there.
