So when isn't the cheap option cheap? When you wait. If your only key is worn, cracked or the fob is failing, a copy today is from $160. If that last key dies first, the same car becomes an all-keys-lost job from $200, and the car sits where it is until the new key is made. That is why I suggest a spare while one key still works. The second key at the same visit is half price, so a pair made together (for example $160 + $80) costs less than two separate visits.

A hardware-store key counter can be cheaper for a plain metal blade with no chip. Most cars from the 2000s on have a chip in the key, though, and a blade that is only cut will turn the lock but will not start the engine.
