Southdale has clear edges on all four sides. Fermor Avenue runs along the north — between St. Anne's Road and the Perimeter it carries the Trans-Canada Highway through the city — and Lagimodière Boulevard along the east. On the west the neighbourhood stops at the railway tracks behind Lakewood Boulevard, and on the south at Abinojii Mikanah, the former Bishop Grandin Boulevard. Windsor Park is across Fermor, and Island Lakes is across Abinojii Mikanah.
Ladco laid Southdale out in the 1960s as the first community in Winnipeg designed with man-made lakes, and its parks include Stillwater, Edgewater and Edgewood parks, Lakewood Park with Lakewood Park East and West, and Burmac, Newcroft, Shamrock and Vermillion parks.
Lakewood Boulevard is the spine. Where it meets Fermor stands Southdale Centre, 35 Lakewood, with 22 stores and services around a Walmart Supercentre, Rexall and Dollarama among them, and 890 surface parking stalls; Ontario Northland's intercity coaches use a stop for the mall at 46 Lakewood. Further south, J.H. Bruns Collegiate at 250 Lakewood and Southdale Community Centre at 254 share one site with an indoor arena, a wading pool and baseball diamonds, some of them along Willowlake Crescent.
Two more schools are on Southdale streets: École Van Belleghem at 10 Vermillion Road and Shamrock School at 831 Beaverhill Boulevard.
Most cars here spend the night in a driveway or at the curb of a residential street, and that is where a lost or broken key usually comes to light. The other places a car sits for a while are the Southdale Centre lot and the parking off Lakewood, about a block north of Beaverhill, that serves the community centre. The centre runs hockey, ringette and skating on the ice and baseball and softball on the diamonds — a fob that quits after an evening practice, or a key shut inside during a ball game, is dealt with right there in the lot.
