The North End is the part of Winnipeg north of the Canadian Pacific main line and its yards, among the largest railway yards in the world and a physical barrier between the area and the rest of the city to the south. The Red River forms its eastern side and the city limit at Brookside Boulevard its western one, and to the north it runs up to Jefferson Avenue, Keewatin Street, Carruthers Avenue and McGregor Street. Coming in from the south means crossing those tracks. The Slaw Rebchuk Bridge carries Salter Street over the yards, while Main Street and McPhillips pass under the rail lines. The Arlington Bridge has been closed since November 2023 and is being taken down. To the east, Redwood Avenue runs from Salter across Main and over the Redwood Bridge, now named for Harry Lazarenko, into Elmwood.
East of McPhillips is the Old North End, built up around 1900, while west of McPhillips most streets went in from the 1940s on. The neighbourhoods run from William Whyte, Lord Selkirk Park and Dufferin near the tracks to St. John's, Luxton, Mynarski, Burrows Central, Robertson and Inkster-Faraday further north, with Shaughnessy Park and Tyndall Park out west.
Selkirk Avenue is the area’s traditional commercial street, with Merchants Corner at Selkirk and Andrews; the Ukrainian Labour Temple is nearby at 591 Pritchard Avenue.
On residential streets the car is at the curb or, where the lot has one, off the back lane. Beyond the houses, cars gather at the places people drive to: St. John's Park at 1 Fowler Street by the river, the North Centennial Recreation & Leisure Facility on Sinclair Street with its pool and ball diamonds, and the high schools — St. John's on Church Avenue, Sisler on Redwood, R.B. Russell on Dufferin and Children of the Earth on Salter. Main Street and Redwood Avenue are signed winter routes, with no parking from 2 a.m. to 7 a.m. once the City's ban begins.

- Do you come to the North End?
- Yes, every neighbourhood north of the CP yards, from William Whyte and Dufferin by the tracks up to Luxton and out to Tyndall Park by Brookside. I work at the car — curb, back lane or parking lot — so nothing is towed, and because the North End is inside Winnipeg there is no trip fee.
- Can you work on a car in a back lane in winter?
- Yes. The City keeps back lanes to compacted snow rather than bare pavement, which is fine for this work. If you can, clear a path to the driver's door, and tell me the house number, which lane and which side of it the car is on, so I go straight to the right spot.
- What can you do on-site in the North End?
- From a lockout on Selkirk Avenue to a lost key near St. John's Park, I open the car without damage, cut spare and duplicate keys, make a new key from scratch when none is left, and program fobs, remotes and transponder (chip) keys for most makes and models, older cars included. Bring the vehicle registration and a photo ID with the same name, because I check both before any work.
