Why Your Key Fob Only Works Up Close

Mobile auto locksmith · Winnipeg, MB · Updated June 2026

If your key fob only works when you're right next to the car, the most likely cause is a weakening fob battery. Other causes include signal interference, a worn fob, or a low vehicle battery.

Start with the fob battery

A coin-cell battery that's losing charge is the classic reason for shrinking range. The fob can still send a signal, just not a strong one, so it only reaches the car from a step or two away. Swapping in a fresh coin cell is cheap and quick, and it's the first thing I'd try. If you have a second fob, compare the range. If the spare reaches much further, the first one just needs a new battery.

Other reasons for weak range

If a fresh battery doesn't help, consider these.

  • Radio interference from nearby buildings, electronics or large metal structures
  • A low vehicle battery that weakens the car's receiver
  • Internal wear or moisture damage inside the fob
  • Carrying the fob next to your phone or other fobs, which can interfere
  • Standing where your body blocks the signal between fob and car

Quick things to try

A couple of simple tests can narrow things down. Try holding the fob right against your chin or head when you press the button. Your body can act as an antenna and extend the range slightly, which is a handy trick and also a clue that the battery is weak. Also try a different spot in the parking lot, since interference in one area may not exist a few metres away.

When it points to something bigger

If the range stays poor after a new battery and a few location tests, the fob may be wearing out internally, or the car's receiver and the fob may have drifted out of sync. At that point a replacement fob or reprogramming may be the fix. Programming prices depend on the vehicle, so tell me your year, make and model to confirm. I handle most makes and models from 2000 and newer.

Frequently asked questions

Does weak range always mean a dead fob?
Not always. A weakening fob battery is the most common cause, but interference, a low car battery or internal wear can also shorten range.
Can you program a replacement fob at my location?
Yes. I'm mobile and program fobs on site. Pricing depends on your vehicle, so share your year, make and model and I'll confirm.
Why does holding the fob to my head help?
Your body can act as a weak antenna and extend the signal a little. If that trick helps, it's usually a sign the fob battery is getting low.
