Car key programming is the step that teaches your vehicle to accept a new key. Cutting the key to fit the lock is only half the job; the car also has to be told the new key's electronic code is allowed to start it.
Why cutting alone is not enough
Most vehicles from 2000 and newer have a chip in the key and a small computer in the car that keeps a list of approved codes. When you try to start, the car reads the chip and checks it against that list. A freshly cut key with an unknown code will turn but will not start the engine until it has been added to the list.
What actually happens during programming
To program a key, I connect to the car's computer, usually through the diagnostic port under the dash. From there I can have the car learn the new key's code, and on some vehicles remove old codes so a lost key no longer works. It sounds technical, but for most cars it is a calm, methodical process done right there in your driveway or parking spot.
- The key blade is cut to fit your locks
- I connect to the car's onboard computer
- The car learns the new key's chip code
- The new fob buttons or push-button start are set up
- We test that everything actually works before you pay
Why the price is a quote, not a flat rate
Different makes and models handle programming differently. Some are quick and simple; others need more time, extra steps or specific equipment. That is why fob, remote and chip key programming is quoted per vehicle rather than priced as one number for everyone. Tell me your year, make and model and I can confirm what is involved and agree a price up front.
How it goes with me
I am a mobile locksmith, so I bring the equipment to you anywhere in Winnipeg and the surrounding area. Before I start, I check your vehicle registration and matching photo ID. That is my standard procedure to confirm the vehicle is yours and keep everything legitimate. You only pay once the new key is programmed and working, with no hidden fees, and you can pay by Visa, Mastercard, Interac e-Transfer or cash.
Frequently asked questions
- Why does a new key need programming at all?
- Because the car keeps a list of approved electronic codes. A new key is cut to fit the lock, but until its chip code is added to that list, the car will not let it start the engine. Programming is what adds it.
- How long does key programming take?
- It varies by vehicle. Many cars are done fairly quickly, while certain makes and models need more steps or equipment. Tell me your year, make and model and I can give you a clearer idea along with the quote.
- Can programming be done at my location?
- Yes. I am mobile and bring the equipment to you, connecting to the car's computer right there. I just confirm your registration and matching photo ID first, then program and test the key before you pay.
